Genesis Chapter one tells us how God made the Universe in six days, and on the seventh day He rested. Yet many Christians have a lot of trouble with this. They accept that Christ died for them at Calvary to redeem them from their sin and eternal salvation as a child of God.
But creation in six days! That is just too much to accept for some Christians!
Part of the problem in this modern world is that science, in the form of the Hubble satellite has produced magnificent pictures of very distant objects. It is becoming obvious to Christians that the Universe is really very big indeed! And this is a problem for some people. I don't know why because we know that God is a very BIG God indeed and this is reaffirming that fact. We know that the Universe is immense. So what difference does it make if we learn from Hubble that God is even bigger than we had thought!
The Theory of Evolution is now be pushed upon us from all sides. The media continually talk about evolution and 'evolved from' without any scientific proof at all. So why does this bother Christians? This is just another attack on Christianity by an alternative religion, and is no different to opposition from other faith groups.
What is important for Christians is that the Bible is consistant. It does not treat Genesis as though it were folklore or a 'fairy story' as even the Catholic Church believes!
Genesis 1
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
John 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
Mark 10
6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
John 8:44
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
The New Testament is consistent with Genesis and 6 day creation.
So why did God choose to take six days? He could have done it in an instant! One possible answer is given in Exodus 31:12-17
12 Then the LORD said to Moses,
13 "Say to the Israelites, 'You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.
14 " 'Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death; whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from his people.
15 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death.
16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant.
17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested.' "
So God is being consistant. He operates the same way as He expects us to!
